Jane Austen visit to Winchester & Chawton
See the Cottage where Jane Austen spent her Christmases between 1809 and 1816, specially dressed for the season. There’s also an opportunity to see the current exhibition, ‘Austenmania’, which is free with house entry.
Alternatively, you may wish to visit Chawton House, or the Great House, as it was known by Jane, which was owned by her brother, Edward Austen-Knight. Again the house will be decorated and the admission price includes entry to the current exhibition - ‘Sisters of the Pen’.
Both venues have gift shops, suitable for some last minute Christmas shopping and it is possible to have lunch at Cassandra’s Tearoom or The Greyfriar Pub, opposite the Jane Austen Museum, or the Old Kitchen Tearoom in Chawton House.
After our visit to Chawton, you will be taken to nearby Winchester, where there will be an opportunity to visit the Christmas Market, one of the best Christmas Markets in Europe and the new Jane Austen Statue, designed by Martin Jennings and unveiled in October this year. There will be time to visit the Cathedral, if you wish to see the tomb of Jane Austen, before returning to Townhill Park (the Gregg School).
Meet at the main entrance to The Gregg School from 10.00am ready to leave at 10.30am sharp. A changing room will be provided, if required.
We aim to arrive at Chawton at 11.15am (depending on traffic) so book your time-slot accordingly.
